How First Guitar is made

It started on a day I spent three hours searching how to get into electric guitar and still couldn't buy one. There was no shortage of information — it was scattered with no order, and half of it was written by people trying to sell something. It was the same for acoustic, classical, and bass.

What this site does

A guitar hub to choose, buy, learn, and connect for electric, acoustic, classical, and bass.

Two things work today.

  • Decisions for your first six months — which guitar to buy, what else you need and how much it costs, what to do this week, what to check when buying used
  • Links to the next step — directories of teachers and music schools, and of retailers, brands, and luthiers

Transaction features such as lesson booking, payments, and a marketplace will open once enough teachers and retailers have joined.

Principles

  1. There's an order. Every page ends with "what to do now."
  2. No sides. We don't favor any brand or retailer. We always list 2–3 models together and give prices as ranges. The recommendation logic and model lists are managed separately from any affiliate deals.
  3. If we use a term, we explain it on the same line. If we can't, it's in the Glossary.
  4. If we don't know, we say so. Where opinions differ, we say they differ.

Affiliate and ad disclosure policy

As of September 2026, this site has no affiliate links and no ads.

  • If affiliate links are added, we'll say so at the top of that page: "Some links on this page are affiliate links, and we earn a commission on purchases."
  • Sponsored reviews are labeled in the title.
  • Affiliate deals don't affect the recommendation order or the model lists.

The terms are on the Partner program page.

Teacher and retailer directory policy

Teachers, music schools, retailers, and luthiers are listed by registration.

  • Teachers submit proof of experience and a demo video. They carry a "New" label until their first 3 reviews.
  • Teacher cards are posted in the order they're verified. Until then, we show sample profiles.
  • First Guitar only makes the connection; it is not a party to any transaction. Responsibility for lessons and deals lies with the people involved.
  • We recommend holding a first lesson in a public place or at a music school.

Prices

Prices are rough 2026 street-price ranges and can change. We update them once a quarter and show the update date. If you find a wrong price, please let us know.

Review

Playing and setup content is reviewed by working teachers, and the reviewer's name and review date appear at the top of the page. Pages that haven't been reviewed show no reviewer, and we update them in review order.
